Oral Health Advice - Dental Tips During the Coronavirus COVID-19 Pandemic

We are going through some very uncertain times with the coronavirus (COVID-19) affecting countries and communities all around the world.  In the midst of all the uncertainty, here at Capstone Dental, we want to give you certainty with your oral health. We are committed to providing our patients in the Seven Hills, Blacktown and the Western Sydney community with high quality dental care and education. Prevention is the key to avoid going to the dentist for toothaches, dental emergencies, tooth cavities and other major teeth problems. That is why our very own dentists Dr Aarushi and Dr Karen have put together this guide to help you maintain your oral hygiene and oral health in these crazy times. Please remember the advice is general in nature, and if you are unsure, please do speak to your dentist. Here are some of our dental tips:

Tooth Brushing and Flossing Brushing TWICE a day for 2 minutes each time  Remember to use a soft/extra soft toothbrush or a baby brush to reach the back molars Use floss or interdental brushes every night before brushing to clean the gaps between your teeth  Avoid using a whitening/charcoal based toothpaste if you have sensitive teeth Mouth Rinse Mouth rinse in general is not absolutely essential as long as you are brushing/flossing well If you do need to use a mouth rinse, remember to use one that is alcohol free Managing Mouth Ulcers Use salt water (Ratio: 1 tablespoon to ½ cup of warm water) to rinse Be wary of over the counter creams/gels, they can sometimes irritate the ulcer further PLEASE contact us or your doctor if the ulcer persists for more than 2 weeks Diet and Snacking Reduce the frequency of sugary snacks and drinks. If possible, have sweets together with meal time instead of persistent snacking throughout the day  Drink fizzy/sugary drinks through a straw Rinse with water after drinking sugary/fizzy drinks, if you are unable to rinse just sip on some water instead.  If you have just had some acidic/sugary/fizzy drinks, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. Eg: OJ, Energy drinks, Soda, any soft drinks incl. sugary free/diet drinks Sugary/acidic drinks produce acid in the mouth which lowers the pH level and makes the enamel more prone to be dissolved/brushed away For parents: ask your kids to drink a big glass of water before having sweets/fizzy drinks. That way, they will feel full and less likely to have as many sweets/drinks Denture Hygiene (Partial Dentures and Full Dentures) Remember to take your denture out at night so that your gums have a chance to breath. DO NOT sleep with it Brush ALL the surfaces of your denture with a soft brush and liquid hand soap under running water.  DO NOT use toothpaste as it can be abrasive to the denture surface Use denture cleansing tablets once/twice a week.  Drop one tablet into cold/warm water (enough to cover your denture) and leave them in for at least 3 minutes or over night Remember to rinse under running water before putting it back into your mouth  If you use any form of denture glue or denture adhesive like Polident, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned out every night  We hope everyone stays safe and healthy!
